Why Memnon? Who or what is Memnon?

I will write a post about Memnon soon.

Briefly: I have long been fascinated by the ancient story of the so-called statue of Memnon, which reportedly made a sound at or near dawn. The two 60-foot-tall (including the platforms) statues in the photo above are known as the colossi of Memnon, and the statue on the right (the East or North statue) is the one that reportedly made sounds. Both statues actually represent the 18th Dynasty pharaoh Amenhotep III who lived in the 14th century BCE; the statues were in front of his funerary temple, which has not survived.

Because the one statue made a sound at dawn, Greeks and Romans identified it with the mythological hero Memnon, son of the goddess of dawn Eos (Roman Aurora). According to myth, Memnon was an Ethiopian prince who fought on the Trojan side in the Trojan war, and was killed by Achilles.

I have owned the memnon.net domain since 1999.
